Ricardo J. Machado
Department of Information Systems | School of Engineering | University of Minho
Ricardo J. Machado (DEng, MSc, PhD, Dr. Habil, MSOEP, SMIEEE, CSPM-ISPMA) is a Full Professor (Professor Catedrático) of Information Systems Engineering at the University of Minho (UMinho), where he founded this disciplinary area. He currently serves as President (Executive Chairman & Scientific Director) of the CCG/ZGDV Institute and has held several strategic roles including Vice-Rector of UMinho.
He is a member of the Board of GraphicsVision.AI (GVAIN), the leading academic network in Europe in computer graphics and vision, that includes DFKI German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (Germany), HPI Hasso Plattner Institute (Germany), Fraunhofer HHI (Germany), Vicomtech (Spain), CCG/ZGDV Institute (Portugal), IVI Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia, CGAII China-Germany Artificial Intelligence Institute (China), and MVTech (Panama).
At UMinho, he led initiatives in advanced computing and machine learning, and coordinated the collaboration with FCT on Portugal’s first national supercomputers, BOB and Deucalion. He also directed UMinho’s academic quality strategy, leading to the highest national A3ES evaluation. He served as Director of the ALGORITMI Research Centre and coordinated UMinho’s participation in several strategic initiatives, such as CEDT, CMU | Portugal, EIT Digital, EUHubs4Data, and Gaia-X Portugal.
He co-founded DTx and ProChild CoLabs, and TICE.pt and CSCP Clusters, chaired TICE.pt, CT128, and CS03, co-led the CMU | Portugal Thematic Network on Software Engineering (NET-SEI), created technical commissions within IEEE, IFIP, IPQ, served in governing bodies of IEEE, IFIP, NESSI, OEP, OERN, and on expert committees of IEEE, IFIP, ENAEE, CCDR-N, IPQ, IDN. He founded the SEMAG research group at ALGORITMI and the EPMQ department on Software Engineering and Intelligent Data at CCG/ZGDV. He served as President of the Computer Science and Engineering College of the Portuguese Order of Engineers and coordinated the first official acts of the field, published in the Official Gazette. He serves as advisor to the Portuguese Navy, AEMinho, and DNS.pt.
He previously worked as R&D engineer at Texas Instruments and Samsung Electronics, contributing to patented innovations in cyber-physical systems. He also founded the startups LINCIS and Primecog.
He has supervised nearly one hundred PhD and MSc students, many of whom now hold leadership roles in academia and industry. His primary research interests are modelling and requirements engineering, systems architecture, process and project management, as well as information semantics, ontologies, and cognitive computing. He has developed several methods and tools for requirements analysis, software and systems architecture, ontology computation, and project portfolio management, including the 4SRS method and the shobi-PN meta-model.
He is the author of over 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications, inventor of four patents, and editor/co-author of several books, including Requirements in Engineering Projects (Springer) and Requisitos em Projetos de Software e de Sistemas de Informação (Novatec). He has led over 50 R&I projects funded by FCT, ANI, IAPMEI, and the the European Union, in partnership with institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University, MIT, Fraunhofer, and Bosch.
He holds a DEng in Electrical and Computer Engineering (U.Porto), MSc and PhD in Computer Science and Engineering, and a Dr. Habil in Information Systems Engineering (UMinho). He is a Certified Software Product Manager (ISPMA) and completed the Cybersecurity and Crisis Management programme from the Portuguese National Defence Institute. He received several awards, including the IEEE MGA Achievement Award, the APLOG Excellence Award, and a TAA Textbook Award nomination by Springer.
When not working, he may be often found practicing Shotokai Karate Do and Goshin Jutsu, riding his Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycle, taking photos with his Canon gear, seeing (again) the Avatar film, or reading interesting books by the sea.
